Garza beige rayada muy pequeña de humedales y bordes de lagos con juncales y carrizales densos. El patrón de la espalda con rayas contrastantes es distintivo. En vuelo muestra un borde ferruginoso contrastante y ancho en las alas. Usualmente se ven solos, escondidos entre juncos o haciendo vuelos cortos sobre la vegetación o a través de parches de aguas abiertas. Sube fácil y sigilosamente; caza desde perchas sobre el agua, donde se percha pacientemente antes de apuñalar a los peces. Mayormente silencioso.

A very small, buff-streaked heron of wetlands and lake edges with dense rushes and reeds. The pattern of contrasting stripes on its back is distinctive. In flight, it shows a broad, contrasting rusty-brown border on the wings. Usually seen alone, hidden among rushes or making short flights over vegetation or across patches of open water. It climbs easily and stealthily; it hunts from perches over the water, where it patiently hovers before stabbing fish. Mostly silent.
